I am a HUGE farm stall/crafters market located on the R516 (Rooiberg/Thabazimbi road) 5.5
km outside of Bela Bela (Warmbaths). My landmark, the big yellow school bus right next to
the road cannot be overlooked.
My doors opened for the first time in April 2009 as a quite prudish roadside stall with big
dreams for the future. And as time went on, our dreams got wings and I had to make room
for more and more of the requested exquisite and unique gifts and delicious edible
goodies, furniture and home décor.
Another dream which will be taking off very soon is the Liquor Store that I am going to
open one of these beautiful days.
Of course, good food and a peaceful place to linger were high on the request list. We took
note of this request and started, initially with a small kitchen, serving delicious homemade
pies/ sandwiches and drinks served under the thorn trees or on “Oppi Stoep”. Later
requests for Sunday Lunches poured in and before long we were serving lovely “boerekos”
like our mothers and grandmothers made.
Needless to say the kitchen has been enlarged three times since then…..
During the week, “pap and crackling”, farmers breakfast, homemade pies, fish and chips,
vetkoek and mince, grilled sandwiches, homemade bread etc. are always available on the
menu. And I am not even mentioning the delicious cakes… Brides and new moms to be
whom have held their kitchen tea’s or baby showers here can attest to the fun they had on
“Oppi Stoep”, then I am not even talking about the wedding or two we’ve seen here and all
the birthday parties and functions that makes out a part of Peet Se Padstal’s history.
Currently the kitchen is in the hands of the more than capable “Engelsman” a qualified chef
and even if I have to say so myself, his food is darn good… He also has his own dreams and
one of those dreams is to transform the whole restaurant into a bistro where good food
and the leisurely visits on “Oppi Stoep” will be even better. And to top it all, the Padstal is
licenced to sell liquor (to the over 18’s only of course). So, watch this space….
With all the above growth came the problem of not having enough space for all the
handmade crafts, gifts, toys and edible goodies, and I had to build on a LARGE wing where
women can even see and sniff more between all the different items and gifts, baked
goods, jams, furniture, décor items, Nguni/game skins, etc. While the men sit and sip on a
cold beer in the summer or a steaming cup “Kondensmelkkoffie” or a bowl of soup and
homemade bread winter time
